Though he may be charming under the mask, Elwyn is nothing short of a drunken fool who has a tendency to get himself into one odd job after the next. Born and raised in Tural, he grew to be one of the best hunters in Tuliyollal, bringing home his findings and game to sell in the market with his mother. All he knew of his father at this time, was that he was a Sharlayan traveler come to explore and study the continent. His return to Sharlayan just a few moons before Elwyn's birth was unexpected, forcing his mother to raise him alone.Elwyn, for most of his youth, was content with not knowing who his father was. It wasn't until sometime after his 26th nameday that his curiosity grew enough to push him into hitching a voyage on the next merchant ship back to Old Sharlayan.Almost being turned away soon as the boat docked, Elwyn's fuss was fortunate enough to spread word quickly, grabbing the attention of the man he'd been searching for. His father became his sponsor to stay in Sharlayan under the condition that Elwyn help him with his research, to which he quickly agreed to without knowing what all this entailed.Throughout his time in Sharlayan, he learns that his father is part of a family of scholars who are known to dip their studies into the void. As part of the agreement for his father to sponsor him, Elwyn was to assist with his his studies and practices while also keeping them secret. A ritual that would bring forth a being of darkness was Elwyn's next task, however he was unaware of what his true role in this would be. Shadows overtook the room the ritual took place, and born within it was the shadow wolf, making Elwyn it's host.His next task was to track down a family member of his who was rumored to have had gone through a similar process. His older cousin, Eliceyn. He was to learn what he could from her and return to Sharlayan with his findings. Following leads he was given on her whereabouts lead him to pass through a southern portion of Ilsabard. Hiding out in a small tavern called the Coeurl's Tail, which housed patrons of various imperial provinces, Elwyn would then meet a Hrothgar who was on the run after the events of Bozja named, Marek. Forgetting his mission, Elwyn instead helps the Hrothgar and a few others flee Ilsabard after a brawl with conscripts breaks out in the Coeurl's Tail. It was by Marek's influence that Elwyn chose to follow his lead and help him form a bandit group between them and other refugee's that fled alongside them, taking what they felt was necessary for their survival. Elwyn was then redirected to the outer regions of Gridania, finding a new hideout far from others as possible.

Exploring the new territory they were in would eventually lead Elwyn to finding the Lavender Beds, where he would find a fight club called The Harlequin. This would lead him to meeting a viera woman who claimed herself to be the owner of this club named, Cherry. Here he would participate in brawls to bring coin back to Marek, who he called 'The Bandit King.'
